WooCommerce in Austria: honest answers before you start
WooCommerce or Shopify, rebuild or rescue the existing shop, and what does it all cost to run? Here are our answers to the questions that typically come up before a WooCommerce project – for retailers in Vienna and across Austria.
WooCommerce or Shopify?
Both systems can carry a successful shop. The difference is who takes care of what. With Shopify you rent a finished platform: hosting, security and updates are handled for you, in return for a monthly fee and within the limits Shopify sets. With WooCommerce you run the shop yourself on your own server – full freedom and no platform fee, but you are responsible for hosting, updates and security. WooCommerce is a good fit if …
- you already have a WordPress website and want shop and content in one system
- your shop relies heavily on content such as guides, a blog or tutorials
- you need full control over code, data and hosting location
- you need specific features that a mature plugin covers or that can be built custom
What a WooCommerce shop costs
WooCommerce itself is free. Costs come from implementation, extensions and operation. Our online shop packages start at €3,900; the exact quote depends on design, number of products, integrations and special features. Running costs typically include solid hosting, annual licences for premium plugins, transaction fees charged by payment providers, and maintenance.
Maintenance is the item most often forgotten in price comparisons. WordPress, WooCommerce and plugins receive frequent updates, many of them security fixes. Every WooCommerce shop needs a maintenance plan: updates tested on a staging environment first, off-server backups, uptime and security monitoring, and a clear contact when something breaks. We can take this on for you – including shops we did not build.
Payments, shipping and legal requirements in Austria
Austrian customers expect PayPal, Klarna, EPS bank transfer, Apple Pay and Google Pay alongside credit cards. We connect these through established providers such as Stripe, PayPal or Mollie, whose official plugins are maintained by the providers or by WooCommerce itself. Shipping zones and rates for Austria, Germany and the EU are set up so labels and tracking run automatically.
On the legal side, Austrian shops need an imprint under the E-Commerce Act, terms and withdrawal information, GDPR-compliant consent, and – since 28 June 2025 – many shops fall under the Accessibility Act (BaFG). Selling to consumers in other EU countries above €10,000 a year usually means charging the destination country's VAT via the One-Stop-Shop scheme. We handle the technical side; legal and tax questions belong with your advisers.
Take over or rebuild?
Many shops have grown over years: a plugin for every small thing, an outdated theme, hosting at its limits. Before recommending a rebuild we audit what is there – often removing plugins, switching hosting and optimising load times is enough. If the shop no longer fits your business, a rebuild or a move to Shopify or a custom solution is the more economical path. Either way, every old URL gets a redirect so your rankings survive the change.
